As the summer sun beats down, your trees and shrubs face a challenging season, especially during hot and dry spells. However, with the right care, you can ensure they not only survive but thrive. This guide will walk you through essential tips on watering, mulching, pruning, and storm preparedness to keep your green companions healthy all summer long.

Watering Wisely

Water is the lifeblood of your trees and shrubs, and proper watering is crucial during the summer. The key is to water deeply and infrequently. Shallow watering encourages roots to grow near the surface, making them more susceptible to drought and heat stress. Instead, aim to water the root zone, which is typically the area directly under the tree's canopy and a bit beyond.

For newly planted trees and shrubs, water them more frequently in the first few weeks to help establish their root systems. As they grow, gradually reduce the frequency but increase the amount of water. A good rule of thumb is to provide about 10 gallons of water per inch of the tree's trunk diameter. For shrubs, water until the soil is moist to a depth of 6 - 8 inches.

It's best to water early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperature is cooler and evaporation is minimal. This allows the water to soak into the soil and reach the roots effectively. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day, as much of the water will evaporate before it can be absorbed.

Mulching Magic

Mulching is a simple yet powerful technique that offers numerous benefits for your trees and shrubs. A layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, suppress weeds, and improve soil structure as it decomposes.

When applying mulch, start by clearing any grass or weeds from around the base of the tree or shrub. Then, spread a 2 - 4 - inch layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips, shredded bark, or compost, around the plant. Make sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent moisture - related diseases and rodent damage.

Organic mulches break down over time, adding nutrients to the soil. As the mulch decomposes, it also encourages the growth of beneficial soil organisms that help improve soil fertility. Replenish the mulch layer annually to maintain its effectiveness.

Pruning for Health

Pruning is an important part of tree and shrub care, and summer can be a good time for some types of pruning. However, it's essential to know what to prune and when. Avoid heavy pruning during the summer heat, as it can stress the plant. Instead, focus on removing dead, damaged, or diseased branches.

Dead branches not only look unsightly but can also pose a safety hazard, especially during storms. Use sharp, clean pruning tools to make clean cuts. For small branches, hand pruners are sufficient, while larger branches may require loppers or a pruning saw.

When pruning, make the cut just outside the branch collar, which is the swollen area where the branch meets the trunk or another branch. This helps the plant heal more quickly and reduces the risk of infection. If you're unsure about how to prune a particular tree or shrub, consult a professional arborist.

Storm Preparedness

Summer storms can bring strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning, which can cause significant damage to your trees and shrubs. To minimize the risk of damage, it's important to take some preventive measures.

Regularly inspect your trees for signs of weakness, such as cracks, cavities, or leaning trunks. If you notice any potential problems, have a professional arborist evaluate the tree and recommend appropriate action. They may suggest pruning to reduce the weight of the branches or cabling and bracing to support weak limbs.

During a storm, if possible, move potted shrubs to a sheltered area. After the storm, check your trees and shrubs for damage. If a tree has been uprooted or a large branch has fallen, be cautious when approaching it. Contact a professional tree service to safely remove the debris and assess the damage to the remaining plant.

In conclusion, caring for your trees and shrubs during the summer requires a combination of proper watering, mulching, pruning, and storm preparedness. By following these tips, you can ensure that your trees and shrubs remain healthy and beautiful throughout the hot and dry summer months, enhancing the overall beauty and value of your garden.
